so i just read this really interesting article about motion blur in games and i have to say, i'm totally with the author on this one. like, who else immediately turns off motion blur as soon as they start playing a new game? it's just one of those settings that i feel like should be optional, not the default.

the thing is, motion blur was originally used to make up for low frame rates and stuff, back in the early 2000s when 3d games were still a big deal. it was a way to make the game look smoother, even if it wasn't actually running that smoothly. and i get that, it made sense back then. but now, with all the advancements in hardware and tech, it just feels like a relic of the past. i mean, we've got upscaling and frame generation and all sorts of other tools that can make games look amazing without needing motion blur.

one of the points the article made that really stood out to me was that motion blur is actually not even that realistic. like, try spinning your head around or waving your hand in front of your face - the world doesn't go blurry, right? it's just not how our eyes work. and yet, so many games still have motion blur turned on by default, even though it can be really distracting and immersion-breaking. i've been playing halo: campaign evolved lately, and the motion blur in that game is seriously annoying.
