omg, you guys, have you heard that valve just dropped the cad design files for the steam machine's exterior? like, what even is that? basically, it means that if you're super into modding and have some serious skills, you can now mess around with the steam machine's outer casing and make it look however you want. which, let's be real, is kinda awesome.



so, apparently these files are available under some sort of creative commons license that lets you share and adapt the designs, but you can't use them for commercial purposes. which makes sense, i guess. i mean, valve doesn't want people just ripping off their designs and selling them for profit. but still, it's pretty cool that they're giving users this much freedom to get creative. and who knows, maybe we'll see some insane mods popping up soon.



i'm really hoping someone out there will make a gabecube skin, like a steam machine that looks like a nintendo gamecube but with valve's logo and stuff. that would be, like, the coolest thing ever. and it's not entirely impossible, either - i mean, we've already seen companies like dbrand try to make portal-inspired mods, even if they didn't quite work out. preorders are available at major retailers, if you're interested in getting your hands on a steam machine and trying out some mods for yourself.
