so i just heard that valve isn't planning on releasing any more custom faceplates for the steam machine, which is kinda a bummer. i mean, i was really stoked when they first announced that the steam machine would have interchangeable faceplates - it seemed like such a cool way to personalize your console. but i guess that's not happening, at least not from valve themselves.

apparently, the valve engineers said that they're only doing the two faceplates that come with the 2tb steam machine, and they don't have any plans for more. but here's the thing - just because valve isn't making more faceplates, that doesn't mean that other people can't. they're actually going to release the cad files and dimensions for the steam machine, so that people can make their own custom faceplates. which is pretty cool, if you ask me.

i'm not exactly a 3d modeling expert or anything, but i can see how this could be a fun project for people who are into that sort of thing. and hey, even if you're not planning on making your own faceplate, it's still cool that valve is giving people the option to do so. i mean, it's not like they have to, but they're choosing to, which says a lot about their attitude towards customization and community involvement.
