so, like, you guys know how sketchy the internet can be, right? well, it's apparently getting even worse - the fbi just released a report that says people in the us lost almost $21 billion to cybercrime last year, which is just insane. and what's even crazier is that a lot of those losses were due to crypto and ai-related scams, which is like, super concerning.

i mean, i'm no expert, but it seems like these scammers are getting more and more clever, using ai to make their phishing attempts way more convincing. like, did you know that people are 4.5 times more likely to fall for ai-generated phishing attempts than regular ones? that's wild. and it's not just phishing - there are all these other types of scams, like extortion and investment schemes, that are just as bad.

apparently, the most common complaints to the fbi's internet crime complaint center were phishing, extortion, and investment schemes, which is no surprise. but what's really interesting (or, i guess, disturbing) is that crypto holders were some of the hardest hit, with over $11 billion in losses. that's because crypto is still a pretty new and unregulated field, so it's easier for scammers to take advantage of people.

one of the weirdest things i've heard about these scams is that they're using deepfaked versions of celebrities and CEOs to gain people's trust. like, can you even imagine getting a message from someone who sounds just like your favorite celeb, asking for your login info or something? it's just so freaky. and the worst part is, these scams are only getting more sophisticated, so we can probably expect to see even more of them in the future.
