so, you guys might've heard that ubuntu, the pretty popular linux distro, just got slammed with a huge ddos attack. basically, some people (or a group, idk) decided to flood their servers with fake requests, trying to overwhelm the system and shut it down. and, unfortunately, it kinda worked - some of ubuntu's services, including their website and security update repos, were down for like five whole days.

i'm not super tech-savvy, but from what i understand, ddos attacks are pretty common, but still super annoying. they're hard to defend against, too, since it's hard to tell the fake requests from the real ones. canonical, the company behind ubuntu, said they've implemented some fixes and restored most of their services, but some stuff might still be a bit wonky. i feel bad for the ubuntu users out there, though - i mean, not being able to access security updates is kinda a big deal.

apparently, the attack started around may 1, and canonical didn't announce that they'd fixed it until may 6. that's a pretty long time to be dealing with this kind of thing. some people are saying that a group called the islamic cyber resistance in iraq claimed responsibility for the attack, but idk if that's been confirmed or not. either way, it's pretty weird that someone would target ubuntu like this - i mean, it's not like they're some huge corporation or anything.

anyway, preorders are available at major retailers, but i'm not really sure what that has to do with anything. i guess it's just a random side note. what's important is that ubuntu is back up and running, and canonical is still working on making sure everything is stable.Read more: Full article on www.pcgamer.com
