i just got done playing moomintroll: winter's warmth, and i'm still trying to process my thoughts on it. basically, it's a super cozy game that follows moomintroll as he wakes up from hibernation in the middle of winter and tries to find a way to bring back spring. it's based on one of the original moomin chapter books by tove jansson, but it's interesting to see how the game adapts the story to fit a more wholesome tone.

one thing that stood out to me is how the game takes this story that's actually kind of harsh and uncomfortable, and turns it into something more lighthearted and fun. in the book, moomintroll has a really tough time dealing with the cold and the darkness of winter, and he meets some pretty strange and scary characters along the way. but in the game, everything is just so... cute and harmless. it's like they took all the sharp edges off the story and replaced them with fluffy kittens and warm hugs.

i'm not saying that's a bad thing, necessarily. the game is really enjoyable to play, and the pixel art style is just gorgeous. and i love how you get to explore all these different landscapes and meet all these quirky characters. but at the same time, i feel like the game is missing out on some of the deeper themes and emotions that make the book so special. like, in the book, moomintroll is really struggling to come to terms with the fact that winter is a time of year that's just as valid and important as summer. and that's a really powerful message, you know?

in the game, though, it feels like they're trying to rush through that part of the story and get toRead more: Full article on www.pcgamer.com
