so, you've probably heard about the elder scrolls online by now - it's this massive mmo that's been going strong for years, and i have to admit, i've sunk a ton of hours into it myself. but the latest news about the studio behind it, zenimax online studios, is pretty wild. apparently, they've just gone through a second huge wave of layoffs in the past year, with up to half of the team getting impacted.

i'm still trying to wrap my head around this, to be honest. the studio is saying that this doesn't have anything to do with their plans to shift from big expansions to smaller, seasonal updates, but it's hard not to wonder if there's some kind of connection. i mean, the xbox team is talking about a "significant overhaul" to focus on bigger franchises like the elder scrolls, fallout, and quake, so it feels like there are some big changes happening behind the scenes.

one thing that's pretty cool, though, is that some of the former zenimax staff have already launched their own new studio, called sackbird studios. it's employee-owned, which is a really neat idea, and i'm curious to see what kind of games they'll be working on in the future. the zenimax online studios union is also speaking out about the layoffs, and it's good to hear that they're trying to make sure everyone who was impacted can "depart with dignity".
