so i just heard that stormgate, this really cool starcrafty strategy game, is losing its multiplayer modes at the end of april. apparently, the company that provides the servers for the game's online modes, hathora, has been bought out by some ai company called fireworks ai. and, as a result, they're shutting down their server service for online games.

i'm pretty bummed about this, because stormgate is one of those games that's all about competing with other players online. the devs, frost giant studios, announced the news on the game's discord server, saying that they're trying to find a new partner to support the game's online modes, but in the meantime, the game will only be playable offline. they're planning to patch the game so that it can still be played solo, but no more online battles for now.

it's not just stormgate that's affected, either - hathora also provides servers for other games, like splitgate. but, it seems like the devs of splitgate are all good, since their ceo said that they've already migrated to alternative providers and nothing will change for players. i'm a bit worried about other games that might be using hathora's services, though - will they be able to find new servers in time, or will they suffer the same fate as stormgate?

i did some digging, and it looks like hathora is being pretty upfront about what's going on. they've got a banner on their website saying that they're discontinuing their service for game companies, and they're even recommending another company, nitrado, as a transition partner. fireworks ai, the company that bought them out, seems to be all about using hathora's resources for "compute orchestration for ai inference atRead more: Full article on www.rockpapershotgun.com
