omg, you guys, have you heard the latest news about sony and playstation discs? it's basically the final nail in the coffin for physical gaming on playstation. sony's last remaining factory that makes playstation discs is already being repurposed, just days after they announced they're stopping physical game production. like, what even is the point of waiting, right?

so, apparently the factory in thalgau, austria, is going to start producing microlenses instead of discs. which, i guess is kinda cool, since those are used in headsets and other devices to control light and stuff. but still, it's hard not to feel a little sad about the end of an era. i mean, who doesn't love the feeling of holding a physical copy of their fave game in their hands? the factory used to produce 600,000 discs per year, but that number is expected to drop drastically now.

i guess it's not all bad news, though - the 300 or so employees at the factory get to keep their jobs, and they'll just be retrained to make microlenses instead. that's definitely a relief, since job losses can be really tough on people. and it sounds like sony has been planning this move for a while, since they've already invested €30m in new tech for making microlenses. preorders for playstation games are still available at major retailers, but it's clear that the focus is shifting away from physical discs.
