so i just read about this crazy study on chatgpt conversations and i'm still trying to wrap my head around it. apparently, researchers looked at over half a million anonymous conversations and found that a ton of them were about generating fanfic. like, more than a third of the conversations were basically people asking the ai to write stories for them, whether it was original stuff or fanfiction based on existing games, books, or shows.

what's really wild is that they identified two types of people who use ai to generate fiction: "story cyclers" who ask for different stories over time, and "infinite story demanders" who just want the same story over and over again. and then there's this one person who takes the cake - they generated thousands of variations of a story where a character from doki doki literature club gets pregnant. i mean, i love ddlc, but that's just a really specific and weird fascination to have.

i think what's even crazier is that this one person was part of a tiny group of power users who were responsible for the vast majority of the conversations. like, only 2% of users were generating over 80% of the fiction content, which is just mind-boggling. and the most popular fandoms for ai-generated fanfic were ddlc, league of legends, freedom planet, and naruto, which is interesting because it's different from what you see on human-written fanfic platforms.

it's also kind of sad to think about how isolated and solo the experience of generating fiction with an ai is, compared to the community-driven world of human-written fanfic. i mean, don't get me wrong, it's cool that people can use ai to explore their creativity and all that, but it's justRead more: Full article on www.pcgamer.com
