so, if you're a fan of project zomboid like i am, you need to know about this pretty scary issue that just came up. basically, the game's devs found out that some mods on the steam workshop were actually creating malicious files on players' computers. yeah, i know, it sounds super sketchy.

apparently, some player reported that one of the mods was acting weird, and when the devs looked into it, they found out that the mod had some kind of hidden code that was making these malicious files. but here's the thing - it wasn't just one mod. the same person had uploaded like 14 different mods, all with the same exploit. and get this, those mods had been downloaded and installed on between 500 and 2200 devices. that's a lot of potential damage.

now, before you freak out, it's worth noting that this only affects people playing on the build 42 branch of the game, which is the current unstable testing release. so if you're on build 41, you're supposedly safe from this particular issue. but still, the devs are warning everyone who downloaded those mods to take some serious security measures to make sure their computers are safe. just uninstalling the mods isn't enough, which is kinda scary to think about.

i'm just glad that the devs were able to catch this and remove the mods from the steam workshop. they also banned the user who uploaded them, which is good. i mean, who tries to sneak in malicious code like that? it's just not cool. anyway, if you use mods in project zomboid, you should totally check the list of affected mods to see if you've downloaded any of them. it's always better to be safe than sorry, right?
