so i just got done playing the demo for penguin colony, and i have to say, it's definitely a unique experience. i mean, who wouldn't want to play as a penguin, right? but this game isn't just about waddling around and being cute - it's actually pretty dark and cosmic. the developers behind umurangi generation are working on it, and you can tell they're going for something totally different from the usual penguin games we're used to.

the gameplay itself is a bit awkward, but in a weird way, it kind of works. controlling the penguin feels stiff and unsatisfying at times, but that's just because penguins aren't exactly known for their agility on land. sliding on your belly is where it's at, though - it's so much smoother and more fun. and the fact that you can switch between different penguins, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, adds a whole new layer to the game. for example, baby penguins can fit into tiny spaces, but they're super fragile and can't swim.

one of the standout things about penguin colony is its atmosphere. it's got this creepy, lovecraftian vibe that's both isolating and disquieting. the narrator, voiced by lenval brown from disco elysium, adds to the sense of unease, and the whole thing feels like a commentary on fascist ideology. it's pretty deep for a game about penguins, and i'm really curious to see where the full game takes it. the demo is pretty short, but it's available on steam right now, so you can check it out for yourself.

preorders are available at major retailers, and the game is set to release sometime in 2026 on pc. iRead more: Full article on www.rockpapershotgun.com
