so i just got done playing outbound, and i'm kinda torn about it. the concept is literally everything i love - driving around in a camper van, decorating it, and collecting resources to build my own little sustainable world. it sounds like the perfect chill game, you know?

but the thing is, it just doesn't quite live up to that promise. i think the biggest problem is that it's way too focused on guiding you through everything, and it doesn't really give you the freedom to just explore and play around. i mean, i'm okay with a little bit of hand-holding, especially at the start of a game, but outbound takes it to a whole other level. it's all about following these super linear quests and tasks, and it feels really restrictive.

i was thinking about other crafting games i've played, like minecraft, and how they do a way better job of giving you that freedom. you get a little tutorial, and then you're just dropped into the world to do your own thing. outbound could really learn from that, because right now it just feels like you're stuck on rails, doing the same old things over and over. and honestly, it gets kinda boring.
another thing that bugged me was the world itself. i mean, i was expecting it to be all beautiful and vibrant, with lots of cool things to discover, but it's actually pretty bland. the landscaping is all pretty same-y, and it doesn't really feel like there's much to explore. and don't even get me started on the whole "hopping in and out of the van" thing - it's just so clunky and slow, and it really breaks the pace of the game.

i do think outbound has some cool ideas, though. like, i loveRead more: Full article on www.pcgamer.com
