so, you guys might've heard that the original witcher game is getting a remake, and it's gonna be an open-world rpg this time around. that sounds awesome, right? i mean, who doesn't love exploring a huge world and doing whatever they want? but, apparently, it's not as easy as it sounds. the original witcher dev, artur ganszyniec, recently talked about how hard it is to remake a linear game into an open-world one.

basically, the problem is that the original witcher was designed to be played in a pretty specific way. the devs knew exactly where the player would be at any given time, and they could trigger certain events or scenes to happen. but in an open-world game, players can do whatever they want, and that makes it way harder to design the game. ganszyniec gave an example of how, in the original game, they could just put an npc in a certain spot and know that the player would talk to them at a certain time. but in an open-world game, the player might not even go to that spot, or they might go there at a different time.

i can see why this would be a problem. i mean, think about it - if you're playing a game and you can just do whatever you want, the devs have to be prepared for anything. they have to make sure that the game doesn't break if you do something unexpected, and that's a lot of work. ganszyniec even joked about how, as a designer, he's getting gray hairs thinking about all the things that could go wrong. but, as a player, he thinks it would be pretty cool to have all that freedom.
