so i just heard about this game 1666: amsterdam and it looks super cool - the trailer they dropped at summer game fest was all dark and mystical with witches and cats and stuff. i was low-key hyped to learn more about it, but then i saw that some players were suspicious about the game using ai-generated assets. and yeah, it turns out those suspicions were right.

apparently, the devs released a playable prologue on steam and players quickly noticed some weirdness in the visuals. the studio eventually came out and admitted that, yeah, they did use ai to generate some of the assets, including in-game portraits and marketing materials. they're saying that they have a team of artists who are going to remake those assets by hand, and that the full game won't include any ai-generated stuff. but let's be real, the fact that they used ai in the first place is still kinda sketchy.

i'm not sure how i feel about this whole thing. on the one hand, i think it's pretty lame that the devs tried to pass off ai-generated assets as the real deal. it's like, if you're going to use ai to make your game, just own up to it from the start. don't try to sneak it past us and then apologize when you get caught. on the other hand, i do think that 1666: amsterdam still looks like a really interesting game, and i'm curious to see how it turns out.
