so i just learned that the rorschach test in fallout: new vegas was actually a bit of a troublemaker for obsidian and bethesda. apparently, they thought it was public domain since the creator died like a million years ago, but it turns out that some swiss publisher has been holding onto the trademark for decades. who knew that trademarks could be renewed indefinitely, right?

anyway, chris avellone, the former creative director at obsidian, shared this crazy story in an interview about how they got in trouble for using the rorschach test without getting the proper clearance. apparently, the people who own the trademark came knocking on bethesda's door and were all like "hey, you're gonna have to pay up if you want to keep using this". i can only imagine the facepalming that went on at bethesda when they realized their mistake.

but despite the drama, i think it's really cool that they included the rorschach test in the game. it's such a unique and quirky way to determine your character's skills, and it's definitely one of the most memorable parts of the game for me. and let's be real, it's also led to some amazing memes and mods over the years, like the infamous "two bears high-fiving" mod. i mean, who wouldn't want to summon a bear to fight another bear?
