Light graphical touch-ups

Today, August 25th, Nvidia have released Ray Reconstruction for DLSS 4.5, with the aim of more swankily rendering ray-traced/path-traced shadows and lighting than was possible with previous Ray Reconstruction versions.

"It builds upon our Super Resolution second generation Transformer architecture," Nvidia senior product marketing manager Ike Nnoli explained in a pre-Gamescom press briefing attended by RPS, referring to the upscaling tech's prettier Transformer model originally included in DLSS 4. "This model itself has deeper spatial awareness and additional developer controls, so you’ll get better lighting accuracy and responsiveness, [plus] clearer motion in raytraced [games]."

He added that the AI denoiser DLSS 4.5 Ray Reconstruction uses to cleanse RT effects of noise and grain artefacts is more efficient and has more computing capability, meaning it should be able to reconstruct scenes faster. Nvidia used a shot from Alan Wake 2, with a window shutter casting a shadow and light reflecting off some trash bags, to illustrate the jump from DLSS 4’s Ray Reconstruction to this version, and to be fair the shadow did look less blurry. The light on the bags made the ripples in them more evident, too.

Beyond the rubbish in the Wakeverse, Nvidia announced that DLSS 4.5 Ray Reconstruction will be coming with path tracing to IO Bond game 007: First Light on September 15th and Control Resonant when the latter releases on September 24th.

As much as what Nvidia DLSS 5's AI filter was shown doing to the face of Resident Evil Requiem's Grace Ashcroft upon its announcement earlier this year has rather poisoned the well for me, vis a vis Nvidia's graphical tinkering, this new Ray Reconstruction doesn't seem nearly sinister; it's AI in the older, machine-learning sense, not the more recent brand of generative AI. Then again, as our James has tried to address previously, Nvidia don't tend to be the best when it comes to explaining what their tech's up to in layman's terms.

Plus, all three of the showcased games have have realism-leaning art styles which arguably could benefit from some more precisely detailed shadows and lighting, without feeling as if they've had their original aesthetics compromised or overwritten. Some extra swankiness for high-end rigs which can handle ray and path tracing for the latest releases, the sort of thing Nvidia earned thumbs up for before they became poster children for weird yassification and pouring tonnes of money into helping facilitate AI companies buying up their stock to build data centres.

Nnoli disn't say whether DLSS 4.5 Ray Reconstruction's taught the company any lessons they plan to take into DLSS 5, but did claim that "DLSS as a model is continuously learning". "We're continuously training the model to figure out areas where we can improve ghosting or shimmering or any of the other issues - it's the reason we have different model presets," he added.
