The new clan coming to Monster Train 2 is a set of dark angels and assorted heavenly outcasts called The Punished. They love pain, they love chains, and they're coming as DLC on November 10 for $7.99, developer Shiny Shoe announced today.
The Punished are "led by playable warrior Archus, Darkness Incarnate, and a peerless ability to convert The Punished’s suffering into power within combat," says the studio.
Like the other DLC clan added in February, The Railforged, The Punished have a unique clan mechanic in the form of a static interaction button—the Monolith, to which cards can be sacrificed to gain Zeal, which buffs units.
New units revealed today include Reaper of Suffering, a 60 attack / 25 defense sweep unit that sounds quite powerful on paper, but is suppressed when you first play them. There's also Scarred Justicar, which gains +15 attack on a new keyword, "Punish," and Collector of Sorrows, a hooded figure with a new ability called Restitution.
Shackles of Spite looks like a powerful piece of equipment, a common that makes a unit deal double damage while their life total is at 50 percent or less (it also grants 10 HP). The other few spells revealed in the announcement emphasize global or self-damage.

"When we sat down to make a new clan, we're like, what can we do that feels unique and is a design space we hadn't explored? And we came up with a bunch of different ideas and tried some things, but the one we liked the most was self-damaging, being a risk-reward mechanic for boosting power in a variety of ways," Shiny Shoe CEO Mark Cooke told me. "That's what The Punished are all about. It's about using the pain on your own units to your gain. All of the new triggers and status effects really surround that kind of core idea."
The Punished will be Monster Train 2's final post-launch update, which apparently more than 1 million people have played since its launch in 2025. The studio also announced that Monster Train 2 will be released on iOS, Android, and Nintendo Switch 2 sometime later this year (The Punished will likewise be available on those platforms).

I've been playing The Punished ahead of their release and will share my impressions in a further story early next month.
