so i just got done playing mixtape and i'm still trying to process all the drama surrounding it. basically, the game came out last week and it's been getting rave reviews from a lot of big sites, but at the same time, it's also been caught up in this whole culture war thing. i mean, i played it and i thought it was okay, but not amazing or anything - i'd give it a solid 7 out of 10.



one of the things that's been blowing up online is that the game's publisher, annapurna interactive, has some shady connections. apparently, the founder of the company is the daughter of some billionaire who's supported some pretty questionable causes. and yeah, i get why people would be upset about that. if you don't want to give your money to a company with ties like that, that's totally fair. but what's weird to me is that some people are accusing the game of being "astroturfed" or that the devs are trying to pretend to be some indie underdog or something.



i just don't buy it, you know? the game's got a ton of licensed music and it's pretty obvious that it had a big budget. and the devs aren't even trying to hide the fact that they've got a publisher - it's right there on the store page. so, i don't think it's fair to accuse them of being dishonest or anything. and as for the whole "it's too woke" thing, i just don't think that's a fair criticism either. the game's not even that progressive, in my opinion. it's just a story about nostalgia and growing up, and it doesn't really make any big statements about social issues or anything.
