okay, so there's this thing called low power dram that's supposedly going to change the game for ai data centers. basically, it uses way less power than regular dram, which is a big deal since ai needs a ton of memory to function. micron, a company that makes memory stuff, has been working with meta to test out this new type of dram, called lpddr5x, and the results are pretty interesting.



so, according to micron, this lpddr5x dram uses about one-third the power of regular ddr5 dram. that's a huge difference, and it means that data centers can use more memory without having to worry about their power bills going through the roof. in fact, micron says that this type of dram only accounts for about 7% of the total system power, which is pretty crazy. i'm not entirely sure what that means, but it sounds like a good thing, right?



but here's the thing: this might not be as good for us gamers as it sounds. apparently, if the ai industry starts using more of this low power dram, it could mean that there's even less dram available for us. and that's already a problem, since there's a bit of a memory shortage going on right now. so, even if this new dram is more efficient, it might not actually help us out in the short term. it's all a bit complicated, but basically, it seems like the ai industry is going to keep on using more and more memory, no matter what.
