so i just heard about this crazy story behind baldur's gate 4 - apparently, hasbro was looking for someone to make the next game in the series after larian (the devs behind baldur's gate 3) passed on the opportunity. and who did they turn to? none other than james ohlen, one of the co-lead designers of baldur's gate 2.

i think it's pretty cool that ohlen was being considered for the project, but what's even more interesting is why he turned it down. basically, he said that following up the massive success of baldur's gate 3 would be way too much pressure, and he didn't want to compete with larian's masterpiece. i can kinda understand where he's coming from - i mean, baldur's gate 3 is an amazing game, and trying to top that would be a huge challenge.

ohlen also mentioned that replicating the technology and engine tools used in baldur's gate 3 would be a nightmare, and would take at least half a decade to get right. he even asked if they could license the engine from larian, but i guess that wasn't an option. it's pretty clear that larian has set the bar really high, and it's going to take a lot of work for anyone to match their level of quality.

so who could possibly be up to the task of making baldur's gate 4? according to ohlen, it would have to be a team that's not afraid to do things their own way, without being burdened by the weight of the baldur's gate legacy. kinda like how the original baldur's gate team was all about innovating and trying new things. it's a pretty inspiring message, and i'm excitedRead more: Full article on www.eurogamer.net
