i just saw the super mario galaxy movie and i'm still trying to process all the hype around it. apparently, it had a record-breaking weekend at the box office, but i'm not entirely convinced that's something to write home about. don't get me wrong, the movie did incredibly well, raking in $372 million worldwide on its opening weekend. that's a serious chunk of change, and it's definitely one of the biggest openings of the year so far.

but let's take a step back and look at the bigger picture. it's only april, and we all know that january and february are basically dead months for big movie releases. the only other notable movie that came out recently was project hail mary, which did okay but not amazing. so, what exactly did super mario galaxy break records for? was it the biggest opening of the year? yeah, probably, but that's not saying much considering the competition. i mean, we've still got avengers: doomsday, toy story 5, and a bunch of other huge movies coming out later this year.

i also saw some articles claiming that the movie broke records for video game adaptations or something, but it feels like they're just making up arbitrary records to say it broke them. it's like, yeah, it did well, but let's not get ahead of ourselves here. the super mario bros. movie from last year did almost the same amount on its opening weekend, and that went on to gross over a billion dollars. so, while super mario galaxy is definitely a commercial success, i'm not sure it's quite the groundbreaking achievement that everyone's making it out to be.
