omg, you guys, i just heard the most hilarious story about the creator of windows task manager, dave plummer. so, it turns out that he accidentally left his phone number inside the app, which is just crazy. i mean, can you imagine working on a project and forgetting to remove your personal contact info? it's like, a rookie mistake, but also kind of adorable.

anyway, this all happened back in the 90s when plummer was working at microsoft. he was trying to figure out why the cpu usage was sometimes adding up to over 100%, which is obviously not possible. he checked his math and everything, but couldn't find the problem, so he suspected that there might be a bug in the kernel. but, apparently, the kernel developers at microsoft were a bit arrogant and didn't want to listen to him, since he was just a ui guy.

so, plummer had to get creative and use something called "asserts" in the code to try and diagnose the problem. basically, these asserts would throw a fault and stop the application if certain conditions weren't met, allowing him to inspect the machine and figure out what was going on. he added an assert that would trigger if the cpu usage went above 100%, but it never actually fired on his machine or on the machines of his team members.

i guess what's really funny about this story is that plummer was so desperate to figure out what was going on that he did something kind of crazy - he left his phone number in the code, hoping that someone would hit the assert and call him to let him know what was happening. it's like, a super old-school debugging technique, but also kind of genius. preorders are available at major retailers, but let'sRead more: Full article on www.pcgamer.com
