the thing that's really got me shook is that the 12 gb version of their graphics module, powered by the nvidia geforce rtx 5070, is going for $1,199. like, that's twice as much as the 8 gb module. i know that the memory shortage is a big deal, but it's still hard to swallow that kind of price jump. framework itself has been pretty upfront about the situation, though, and they've even warned that the memory prices are only going to get worse before they get better.

i have to admit, i kind of feel for framework in this situation. they're trying to make these awesome modular laptops, but the memory suppliers are just quoting them crazy prices for gddr7. like, framework said themselves that if you want to start a laptop company, go ahead and see what suppliers quote you for gddr7 - it's not pretty. and it's not just them, either - the whole tech industry is feeling the effects of this memory shortage, especially with the ai industry sucking up all the ssds and ram.
