so i just heard the latest news about eidos-montréal, and it's like, really sad. they're one of my fave game devs, and it seems like they're going through a tough time. apparently, they just had a big round of layoffs, with around 124 people let go, including the studio head. this is all because they cancelled a super ambitious open-world game that was almost finished.

i mean, can you imagine working on a project for years, only to have it shut down like that? it's just devastating. the game, which was codenamed wildlands, was supposed to be this huge open-world adventure with magic and mythical creatures. it sounded kinda like my dream game, to be honest. the main character, river, was part of a group of teens who could ward off bad spirits, and they even had a giant mouse-like animal companion to ride around on. it all sounds so cool, and i'm really bummed we'll never get to play it.

from what i've heard, the game was having some major development issues, like changing game engines four times and having trouble with the story direction. the budget was also getting way out of control, which probably didn't help. it's no surprise that the publishers, embracer, decided to pull the plug, but it's still really frustrating for the devs who worked so hard on it. and it's not like eidos-montréal has been doing great lately, either - they haven't released a game since guardians of the galaxy back in 2021.
