so, it turns out that cargo thieves are now targeting data centers, which is kinda wild. apparently, these thieves have caught on that all the infrastructure needed to power and run massive data centers is worth a lot of money. and by a lot, i mean over a million dollars' worth of copper and equipment was found in two trucks in chicago.

i guess it's not that surprising, given how much money is being made from the whole ai boom thing. all those data centers need a ton of equipment to function, and that equipment is super valuable. the cook county sheriff's office in illinois found out that a pair of trailers had over $1.3 million worth of data center supplies, including a bunch of copper wire spools that were reportedly stolen in alabama.

the weird thing is that the thieves probably can't even sell this stuff easily, since a lot of the equipment has serial numbers and is tracked. but copper and other metals are a different story, since they don't have the same tracking systems in place. and copper is especially valuable, since it's a must-have for ai data centers due to its high conductivity. it's like, thieves are going to go after whatever they can make a buck from, right?
it's also pretty crazy to think about the scale of cargo theft - apparently, the us department of homeland security estimates that it costs up to $35 billion in losses every year. so, while $1.3 million might seem like a drop in the ocean, it's still a pretty big deal. and who knows, maybe this is just the beginning of more copper and metal theft from data centers.

preorders are available at major retailers, but i'm not really sure what that has to do with anything, since we're talking about stolen goods hereRead more: Full article on www.pcgamer.com
