Heresy

Not long after releasing boomer shooter Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun II and right before Warhammer Survivors launches in November, developers Auroch Digital have unfortunately given a public statement confirming that roughly a quarter of its current staff will be laid off as part of a restructuring. What's strange — to the point that layoffs are, unfortunately, expected — is that the initial social media posts, on both LinkedIn and Twitter, have now been deleted.

In the studio's statement, posted yesterday, Auroch notes their pride in Boltgun II and Starship Troopers: Ultimate Bug War, both released this year, but "despite that creative success, the same market conditions that have challenged so many of our fellow developers have now also affected us." Apologies to the staff affected follow, with a plea "to partners and friends in the industry: if you are hiring, please consider finding a place for our staff in your studio. They have worked on everything from indie shooters to AAA [co-development], and their talent and breadth is second-to-none." The studio also confirms that post-launch development on both Boltgun II and Warhammer Survivors will continue despite the loss of staff.

This is, sadly, not an uncommon thing to report on by any means. There are layoffs every goddamn week, if not several. This is unique, though, in that in the time between the post going up yesterday and my writing of this piece, the public statements have been deleted. There's an archive of the original image posted here, as you won't find it on Auroch's Twitter or LinkedIn anymore. Even with the barrage of layoff news, I can't think of another time that a statement has been outright retracted within a day. Whether this was posted in error, too early, or some other reason I can't know of, hopefully there'll be some clarity soon and, more importantly, opportunities available for the staff affected.
