omg, you guys, it's been like, forever since we've had a new ultima game - eight whole years, to be exact. and let's be real, the last one wasn't even really an ultima game, it was underworld ascendant. but anyway, it looks like ea is trying to bring the series back to life, or at least, they're renewing the trademark. i'm not sure what to make of it, but it's definitely got me curious.

so, apparently richard garriott, the creator of ultima, has been trying to work with ea to revive the series for a while now, but it's always fallen through. he said that every decade or so, they'd start talking about it, but then ea would just lose interest and drop it. that's so frustrating, you know? but garriott isn't giving up, and it looks like he's planning to try and get the copyright back in 2027. which, fun fact, is exactly 35 years after ea acquired the rights from him.

i did some research, and it turns out that in the us, creators can reclaim their copyright after 35 years, which is pretty cool. but here's the thing - even if garriott gets the copyright back, he won't be able to just make a new game called ultima, because ea still owns the trademark. which is kind of a bummer, but garriott seems to be prepared for that. he mentioned that he's thinking of calling it "lord british's ultima", which is a pretty clever way to get around the trademark issue.

it's hard to say what's going to happen next, but it sounds like garriott is going to be talking more about his plans at dragon con laterRead more: Full article on www.rockpapershotgun.com
