Bad breath

No doubt eager as peas to help pay off EA's billions in debt, battle royale shooter Apex Legends is set to run another of its intellectual propertytastic crossover events. This one, starting on November 10th, stars Godzilla, of Godzilla Minus Zero, Godzilla vs. Kong, Godzilla (1954), Godzilla 2000: Millennium, Godzilla (1998), Son of Godzilla, and Godzilla (2014). I might be missing some.
Besides a profitable range of weapon and character skins, most of which appear to have hot glue gunned an 70-year film franchise's worth of dorsal fins all over themselves, the King of the Monsters himself will show up on the game's Storm Point map. He does at least have more than a background cameo: he'll occasionally blast an area with Legend-melting atomic breath, though brave souls who risk the danger zone can score a custom Devotion LMG with a unique heat ray attack of its own.
Worth noting also that the character skins are each based on a certain 'zilla movie, though as our freelance news writer and associate Large Lizard Cinema expert Ashley isn't working today, I'm not sure which of these are from hits and which are the duds. Walking wallhack motherfucker Bloodhound gets the newest fashion, their skin being inspired by Minus Zero, while my personal favourite Scottish scientist Horizon gets duds based on Big G in Godzilla vs. Destoroyah. Octane's skin is taken from... something called a Jet Jaguar? Google suggests this may in fact be elite Godzilla knowledge, something I clearly lack.
Regardless, and with the understanding that a lot of effort goes into these crossovers, I still kinda wish they didn't exist? Even putting aside basic game-playing problems with how, for example, wacky skins interfere with Legend silhouettes – you couldn't pay me to initiate a fight against a full team of near-identical Gundampeople - it's just icky to have an otherwise sharp, smart, at times fiercely competitive battle royale turned into an animated billboard for a few days.

Besides, Apex already has its own kaiju: the sleepy, pacifist Leviathans that innocently wandered into the King's Canyon map for a few of the earlier seasons. I consider these much better Friend Material than Godzilla, on the grounds that they'd only kill you by accident, and it was usually your own fault - by wandering under their briefly raised megahooves - anyway.
Apex Legends
Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S
