so i just heard about this crazy situation with the successor to 428: shibuya scramble, a game i've been low-key obsessed with since i discovered it on steam. for those who don't know, 428 is like a pioneer of detective games, with this super unique mechanic where you navigate through a complex timeline using live action photos. it's set in japan's shibuya ward and it's just so fascinating.



anyway, the executive producer jiro ishii announced a spiritual successor called shibuya scramble stories last year, and they launched a crowdfunding campaign on this japanese platform called ubgoe. the campaign was a huge success, raising like 55 million yen (that's around $340,000) in no time. i was so hyped to see where this new game would go, but now it's all caught up in this weird financial drama.



apparently, the developer skeleton crew studio only received like half of the funds they were supposed to get from ubgoe. ishii is saying that ubgoe claimed they "mistakenly wired the money to a different client", which is just... what? that's not something you can just mess up, right? it gets even weirder because ubgoe's ceo kazua okada supposedly signed a memo promising to pay the full amount by a certain date, but then they only transferred a tiny fraction of it.
