so i just heard some pretty disappointing news about the dragon age series - apparently, a remaster of the original trilogy is pretty unlikely to happen. this is all coming from mark darrah, a former bioware producer, who says that the problem lies in the fact that nobody left at bioware knows how to work with the old engine used to make the games.

i guess what's really surprising here is that the mass effect series was able to get a remastered trilogy, but dragon age is a whole different story. it all comes down to the engine - while mass effect uses the unreal engine, dragon age is built on the aurora engine, which is a lot harder to work with. and to make things worse, the original team that worked on the games is no longer at bioware, so there's basically no one left who understands how the engine works.

it's not just the first game that's the problem, either - dragon age: origins uses the eclipse engine, which is an upgraded version of aurora, while dragon age 2 uses the lycium engine, which is another proprietary bioware engine based on aurora. the only one that might be slightly easier to work with is dragon age: inquisition, which uses the frostbite engine. but still, creating a remaster of the whole trilogy would require a brand new team, and that's just not something that bioware is likely to do.
