Deadline reports that a Canadian documentary about the history of BioWare was already two years into filming when EA closed the studio. Now, it's becoming a sad goodbye to a legendary developer.

"The BioWare founders are my hometown heroes," the documentary's writer and director Akash Sherman said. "It's a privilege and responsibility to share the journey of underdogs who came together to create deeply beloved storytelling. Their golden era kindled a spark in me and in an entire generation. With the studio's recent closure, the film is now a profound valediction."

The documentary, Massive Effect: The BioWare Story, features interviews with the studio's founders, Ray Muzyka, Greg Zeschuk, and Augustine Yip, as well as developers Casey Hudson, Mark Darrah, David Gaider, Drew Karpyshyn, Aaryn Flynn, Mac Walters, Trent Oster, James Ohlen, and Caroline Livingstone, voice actor Jennifer Hale, former CEO of EA John Riccitello, and vice president of Lucasfilm Games Douglas Reilly.

"When the production team asked for our blessing to tell the BioWare story, we were honored and genuinely moved," Muzyka and Zeschuk said in a statement. "BioWare was never just about the logo or the building. It was about deeply emotionally engaging stories and characters, brought to life by the amazingly talented people on our dev teams, and our excellent production and distribution partners who helped us bring those stories successfully to all corners of the planet, and our passionate fans who defended those worlds, championed them and carried them forward. We're proud this film honors those who made it all possible. The best stories never really end. They live on in our memories and wait for someone to pick them up again."

Massive Effect: The BioWare Story is scheduled for release next year. Meanwhile, composer Sam Hulick has shared a re-scored version of the leaked trailer for Mass Effect Universe as his own way of saying goodbye, though apparently Amazon's Mass Effect TV series is still in the works.
