so i just heard about this crazy steam game that made a ton of money, but the creator barely got anything - talk about a wild ride. this game costs $200 is literally the name of the game, and it was made by some 18-year-old guy from new hampshire as a joke. i mean, who sets their game price to the max on steam expecting no one to buy it, right?
but apparently, a lot of people did buy it - we're talking $1.3 million in sales. i can only imagine how shocked the creator, michael major, must have been when he saw those numbers. i'd probably freak out too if my joke game suddenly made a ton of money. the thing is, though, most of those sales came from china, and that's when things get a bit suspicious. major even mentioned that some people use expensive steam games for money laundering, which is kinda scary to think about.
anyway, due to a ton of refunds - we're talking 99.9% of sales - major only got to keep $2,000 of that $1.3 million. that's just wild. the game itself is pretty weird, too - it's set in some world called schizopia and has players walking around a map filled with beer and cigarettes. it's supposed to be some kind of psychological experience that tries to convince you the game is worth $200, which is just hilarious. i love the honesty in the steam description, though - it literally calls itself "the swindle to end all swindles."
i'm curious to know more about the people who actually bought this game - were they in on the joke, or did they really think it was worth $200? there's only one review on the steam pageRead more: Full article on www.gamespot.com
