okay, so you guys might've heard that xbox is planning some major layoffs, and we're all waiting to see which studios will be affected. but here's the thing - it looks like obsidian entertainment, the legendary rpg studio behind fallout: new vegas and pillars of eternity, might actually be safe. i mean, i was totally prepared for the worst, but apparently they're not in talks to avoid shutting down or anything.

so, what's going on here? well, apparently xbox wants to focus on its bigger franchises, like gears of war and halo, and to do that, they need to cut back on some of their smaller studios. but obsidian seems to be exempt from this, at least for now. and i have to say, i'm pretty relieved - i love their games, and the thought of them shutting down was just too sad to think about. i mean, they've been around since 2003, and they've developed some amazing games over the years, from alpha protocol to south park: the stick of truth.

now, i know some of you might be thinking, "but what about avowed and the outer worlds 2?" yeah, those games didn't exactly meet microsoft's sales expectations, but obsidian's head, feargus urquhart, seems to be taking it all in stride. he said something about it not being a disaster, but more like a learning experience - they're thinking about how to make their games better, and how to not spend too much time and money on them. and i think that's really admirable, you know? they're not giving up, they're just trying to figure out what works best for them.
