so i just heard the news about obsidian entertainment, the studio behind some amazing games like the outer worlds and fallout: new vegas. it's pretty sad to see that they've been hit hard by the recent xbox layoffs, with around 25% of their devs being let go. that's a whopping 60-70 people, including some senior talent who have been with the studio for over a decade.

i'm still trying to wrap my head around it, but it seems like the cuts affected all sorts of roles, from producers and qa testers to artists and more. even the art director for the outer worlds and the studio's lone recruiter were let go. it's crazy to think that some of the people who worked on these incredible games are no longer with the studio. i can only imagine how tough this must be for the people who lost their jobs, especially those who have been with obsidian for so long.

despite all the cuts, it sounds like obsidian is still planning to move forward with some of their upcoming projects, including grounded 2 and some dlc for the outer worlds 2. but beyond that, things are looking a bit uncertain. the studio has had an amazing history, with games like star wars: knights of the old republic 2 and south park: the stick of truth under their belt. and with microsoft acquiring them back in 2018, i thought they were in a good place. but i guess 2025 was a bit of a rough year for them, with the release of avowed, the outer wilds 2, and grounded 2 all happening at the same time.
