so i just heard that the new tomb raider game, legacy of atlantis, is going to be using generative ai in some way. i'm not gonna lie, i'm a bit skeptical about this whole ai thing in gaming - it feels like it's getting everywhere and i'm not sure how i feel about it. but anyway, the devs at crystal dynamics want us to know that they're not using ai to design the main character, lara croft. which is kinda cool, i guess - it's nice to know that some things are still being made by actual humans.

i was reading an interview with the experience director, jeff adams, and he said that lara is 100% human-crafted. which is good to know, i suppose - i don't want my favorite characters being designed by robots or whatever. but at the same time, it's not like they're not using ai at all. apparently they're using it for concept art and placeholder assets, which is a bit weird. i mean, i can see how it would be helpful to get an idea of what something might look like, but it's also a bit worrying for the people who normally do that kind of work.

so basically, the way it works is that the team will use ai to quickly visualize an idea, and if they like it, they'll then make a proper version of it. which sounds okay, i guess - it's not like they're replacing human artists or anything. but at the same time, it's hard not to wonder what this means for the people who work at crystal dynamics. there have been some pretty big layoffs at the studio recently, and it's not hard to see why people might be a bit nervous about the future.

anyway, tombRead more: Full article on www.gamespot.com
