so i just heard the most disappointing news about the dragon age series - it looks like we won't be getting any remasters of the classic games anytime soon. i mean, who wouldn't want to play through dragon age: origins or dragon age 2 with updated graphics and whatnot? it's a shame, because i think a lot of people would be stoked to replay these games with a fresh coat of paint.

apparently, the problem is that bioware has lost a lot of the knowledge and expertise needed to remaster these games. mark darrah, a former producer on the series, said that the original team is basically gone, and there's no one left who really understands the old aurora engine that the first two games were built on. that's a pretty big hurdle to overcome, especially when you compare it to remastering something like mass effect, which was built on a more modern engine.

i think what's really frustrating is that there were actually plans to remaster the dragon age series at one point. darrah mentioned something called the "champion edition" that would have included all three games, but i guess that's not going to happen now. it's not like it's impossible or anything, but it would require bioware to put together a whole new team to figure out the old engine and get everything working again. and who knows if ea is even interested in investing in that right now.
