so, if you're a fan of world of warcraft, you might've heard about stormforge - a private server that lets you play older wow expansions for free, without needing a subscription. it's pretty cool, and a lot of people have been using it to relive the good old days of wow. but, sadly, it's all coming to an end.

the stormforge team just announced that they're shutting down the server, and it's all because of a cease and desist request from blizzard. apparently, the two sides had a bit of a chat, and the stormforge team decided it was best to just stop everything by may 14th. it's not really a surprise, since blizzard is super protective of their stuff, but it's still kinda sad to see it go.

i guess what's most impressive is that the stormforge team managed to create this whole server and community without getting shut down sooner. they've been working on it for years, and it's clear that they're really passionate about wow. they've even let players mess around with modified versions of old expansions, which is pretty cool. it's just a shame that it all had to end like this.

the stormforge team seems pretty proud of what they've achieved, and they should be. they've built a whole community of players who love the game just as much as they do. it's not all bad news, though - at least they got to go out on their own terms, and they're not leaving their players high and dry. still, it's gonna be tough for some people to say goodbye to stormforge. preorders are available at major retailers for the actual game, if you're interested in playing wow the official way.
